Devil Nana Shake it up baby! Devil Nana Shaker box class 31st October,2008
Starting Time: 8.30pm Sydney time (Daylight Saving is in force)

Materials you will need to get prior to class:
plastic page protector or transparency(clear and flat)
Foam core board
a sharp craft knife
double sided tape
some cardstock or patterned paper for front of box
small amount of co-ordinating paint for the sides
small items to fill your shaker box....microbeads,locks of hair, buttons, punchies, sand, dried flower petals, vellum shapes etc.

Tools you will be using
cutting board
pencil
paint& paintbrush
scissors or cutter
craft knife

NB you may like to think about a theme Confused for this layout prior to the date as what you do will affect your choice of filling. eg sand for a beach layout
screws, washers etc for a building layout etc, vellum bubbles for a bathtime layout etc. Choose your photos.
For the purposes of this demonstration, I will make a rectangular shaker box-it is easiest if you've never attempted them before but they can be any shape.Check out my blog to see the propellor one I had published plus others.

Step by step instructions for making shaker boxes.
Step 1: Cut the desired size of cardboard. This will act as your template.
Step 2: Turn to the back and draw/trace desired shape of your window to cut out. If using letters make sure you trace them backwards. Using a craft knife, cut out your shape leaving the outer frame intact. Measure and cut your foam core board in identical way. You may need to score it more than once to get a clear cut.

Step 3: Cut a piece of page protector/transparency or vellum a little smaller than the cardstock. This will be your window.
Step 4: Adhere transparency to the back of the cardstock using double sided tape

Step 5: Working on the back side of the cardstock adhere all 4 sides of the shaker box with double sided foam tape. If using foam core board use double sided tape around inner edges of window. Leave no gaps as the contents will escape. This is especially true for glitter, sand and other grainy substances. You now have a 3d frame or window. Turn face down ie front to board.

Step 6: Cut another piece of cardstock the same size as the first. This will be your background of your shaker box. If you wish to, decorate it with patterned paper or rubber stamps or die cuts or foil etc. (When the contents of your shaker box slide away you will see this background)
Step 7: Select what you’d like in the shaker box and place in it, making sure not to overfill it and if one sided objects make sure the front side is facing the window. If using sand etc make sure the shaker box can handle the weight of the filling. DO NOT USE MOIST FILLINGS.

Step 8: Carefully peel the top off the double sided foam tape and adhere the backing card front side down to the shaker box, which is still face down on your board. Be careful that no items get stuck between the tape and the shaker box. If using foam core board you need to run another lot of double sided tape around the inner edge of your frame, with again no gaps. Press firmly along the tape. I always use double sided tape around the outer edge of the frame as well.
Step 9: Carefully lift the whole thing and test it (shake it gently). If it is intact adhere to your layout

Good luck and enjoy yourself!

Here are some examples .These were found on “Scrapjazz”.
http://www.scrapjazz.com/gallery/?m=image&id=477190&type=searchwords&s=shaker+box&page=1&vote=0

http://www.scrapjazz.com/gallery/?m=image&id=309148&type=searchwords&s=shaker+box&start=280&page=1&vote=0

http://www.scrapjazz.com/gallery/?m=image&id=302662&type=searchwords&s=shaker+box&start=390&page=1&vote=0
As you can see they come in all shapes and can be used on tags, cards, layouts, mini albums. In fact almost anywhere in scrapbooking.

TIPS FOR SHAKER BOXES
• If your plastic protector has static cling wipe with a fabric softener sheet.
• Play around with the backing, mount on torn paper or use lots of layers.
• Put memorabilia in it eg baby’s first tooth.
• Use punchies or die cuts for your shaker box
• Use vellum as the window and use bright coloured fillers for a muted look.
• Double the layers of foam tape for a deeper box.
• You can paint/ink the sides of the foam core board after box is completed if you think it will be seen or want a perfect colour match.

Stacie, something to give dimension to your box, to allow both sides to stick with room for the "shake" in the middle. A THICK foam tape for example. Well thats what I was assuming anyway Foot in Mouth.

I'll investigate alternatives and let you know, but ask at your local scrapping store. Julie has just suggested double sided foam tape but make sure it is thick enough to put your shaky bits in.Apparently it comes in different thicknesses. Bouncy Laugh

Foam core board is a piece of foam rubber with thin cardstock on both sides of it to hold it firm.Usually white. I'll be using it in my demo.

I've always used double sided foam tape Geraldine. Of course I don't usually put really thick items in the box either. I'll take some pics and post them here if our 'instructor' Mr. Green doesn't mind. I had filled mine with white sand from Clearwater Beach in FL and tiny shells. Another time I used glitter and beads for a wedding picture. I need to see if I can find my scrapbooking CDs. I had archived items from my computer but I had a couple of great books with ideas on my harddrive at one time.

Instructions are there, with pictures! (THANK YOU EMILY) Thank You
Good luck everyone. I hope it is clear.
I'll be on here for a while if you have any problems and will check in a few times over the weekend too.
A few more hints.
Press firmly on to the adhered pieces to ensure smooth grip, especially when you put the backing cardstock on it.
Don't use dog food like one of the teenagers at our LSS did. It seeped out everywhere. Bouncy Laugh
Scrapjazz suggested shaved ice...I don't think that would work either.
Lavender would be nice if you had a garden page or dried rose petals. Dig Garden

Wink or punchies....keep Brock busy! Giggle

I just looked at my pictures in the instructions. It was an accurate rectangle. It looks wonky because I had to take some of the pictures with my left hand and at strange angles.(That's my excuse anyway!) Spin Giggle Bouncy Laugh
